A
Chinese Romeo & Juliet
The Butterfly Lovers'
Gala
Erhu player Betti Xiang joins the
orchestra in The "Butterfly
Lovers" Concerto inspired
by China’s popular love story. This "Chinese Romeo
and Juliet" is about two lovers unable to marry because
of family backgrounds. They die of heartbreak and turn into
butterflies, united in death. The Erhu, Chinese ancestor of
the violin, sounds halfway between the western violin and the
human voice. The romantic evening continues with Wagner's Overture
from Tannhauser and
Berlioz's autobiographical depiction of a young artist's
love, Symphonie Fantastique.
