Program Note from David Alan Miller

When we set out to celebrate the completion of the Empire State Trail, one of our goals was to explore the history and future of the ecosystems it connects. Endangered explores the natural wonder and beauty of our great State through a trio of new works celebrating our beautiful but sometimes fragile environment.

Tanner Porter's evocative, danceable Sturgeon, celebrates the incredible comeback of my favorite fish, a fish that was once so abundant in the Hudson River that it was called Albany Beef—really!—before going nearly extinct. Carlos Bandera’s Echolocation evokes the mystical world of our threatened bat populations of the Mohawk Valley.  The piece even includes some bat-impersonating audience participation. And Takuma Itoh's gorgeous new Tear of the Clouds, pays homage to the life-giving headwaters from which the Hudson—and by extension, our region—springs forth.

Musically, these pieces for 13 musicians are rooted in another work about the majesty of nature, the original chamber music version of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. We will play this timeless American classic along with the three world premieres; a particular treat in the acoustics of Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.

To welcome you back to the concert hall safely, we are asking all patrons to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a recent (within 72 hours) negative COVID test upon entry. Masks are welcome but not required. This policy may be updated if local conditions change. Click here to see our full health and safety protocol. Thank you!
