An Erie Canal Bicentennial Event

About Gateway Harbor Park

At the western end of the Erie Canal, Tonawanda and North Tonawanda, two cities in two counties, are divided and connected by the same historic waterway. Beginning in the 1990s, the cities pursued a shared vision focused on waterfront access, recreation, trails, and downtown reinvestment. Once abandoned canal fronts are now a regional destination, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to festivals, restaurants, and outdoor activities. Gateway Harbor stands as a symbol of the Erie Canal’s enduring power to unite communities and spark economic renewal.
