Reading Session Score Guidelines

Please review the following guidelines to prepare a score to submit to for the First Draughts reading and recording session.

Your piece must be no more than 5 minutes long. While re-orchestrations of previous works are acceptable, new compositions are preferred. Your piece may utilize the following instrumentation:  

0.1.1.1 - 1.0.0.0 - 1perc - piano - strings = 1/1/1/1/1

We are not able to accommodate auxiliary woodwind instruments.

Due to logistical concerns, only the following percussion instruments will be available during the reading: 

  • Vibraphone

  • Glockenspiel 

  • Snare Drum

  • Bass Drum

  • Tam-tam

  • Cymbals (Sus, A2, Splash)

  • Windchimes

  • Tambourine

  • Triangle

  • Woodblocks 

The provided instrumentation list is final.

Program Expectations 

Your submitted piece must be no more than 5 minutes long. During your time at the American Music Festival, you will present your music in masterclasses with Professor Theofanidis and participate in group lectures on contemporary orchestration. You have the opportunity to have your work rehearsed and performed by Maestro Miller and members of the Albany Symphony, culminating in the "First Draughts" Concert as part of the America Music Festival.
